Why We Made this Film

We use oil for far more than just driving our cars. It's used for plastics, makeup, furniture, clothes, and much more. Checkerspot has tapped into the frontier of biology to build a decarbonized solution: making oils from microalgae through fermentation.

What drew us to this story was how this company was unlocking the secrets of nature to create everyday products. Most notably, their biomanufactured materials are used to make WNDR Alpine products. This isn’t just a one-off demonstration of a lab solution, but rather a hyper-practical example that skiers in the backcountry are using everyday on the slopes.

What drew us to the Checkerspot story was how the company was rooted in deep science - something we explored in profiling Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer Scott Franklin, but was building products that were tangible to the end-consumer. At Pique, we often think about how to communicate the challenges of decarbonization while also making things feel relatable to the average person, Checkerspot blends both of these so well.
