Ep. 41 Flying Electric Planes into the Future

Decarbonizing air travel just got some wind beneath its wings.  Heart Aerospace’s battery-powered plane can travel 124 miles, emitting zero emissions. And while that isn’t far enough for most flights, with the help of a fuel-powered generator the plane can reach a distance of 500 miles - still at 50% the carbon output of a regular flight.

Why We Made this Film

Modern aviation makes up 2.7% of global CO2 emissions, but experts expect that number to grow anywhere from 300-700% by 2050. While planes become more efficient with each new model, growing demand for flights is outpacing those advancements. In order to reach our target of limiting atmospheric warming by 1.5 degrees C, we need to decarbonize the industry.

Heart Aerospace is a startup founded by aviation aficionado and MIT graduate Anders Forster. The startup’s electric planes could help companies achieve promises to cut emissions and make shorter plane routes financially feasible by minimizing fuel and maintenance costs. They’re flying toward an electrified future - and they’ll be ready to take off as soon as 2028.
